D.C. Reporters

We are not currently accepting applications for this position.

We’re doubling down on our investigative coverage of the federal government and its impact on people’s lives. And we’re hiring an editor and reporters in Washington to do it.

There’s an enormous amount of news coming from Washington. We’re not going to be covering all of it. We’re not going to be covering the fights or the tweets. We are going be digging into what’s happening inside the halls of power that affects the lives of Americans.

We’re looking for reporters who:

  • Have a track record of aggressive reporting on the federal government and landing revelatory stories about what’s happening.
  • Ache to report stories that are both important and powerfully told.
  • Are truly excited about all the possible ways we can do journalism nowadays: from deep data digging to working with readers to marrying narrative and investigative forms.
  • Really like working with others. Everybody at ProPublica has their own superpower. And we do our best work together.

We love great reporters — of all kinds. Many of our reporters were not previously “investigative reporters,” and you don’t need to be either. What all of us at ProPublica have common is a dedication to digging for the truth. Lots of different reporting skills can be used to do that, including data, engagement and other areas of expertise.

We know there are great candidates who may not fit into what we’ve described above, or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

We are dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of our staff.) We are committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. And we are taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.

If all of this sounds exciting to you, apply using this form.

The jobs are full-time and include benefits. They will be based in our new Washington office, but we’re open to remote working if the fit is right.
